Steamboat House

at AW Architecture
Steamboat Springs, Colorado
2021–Projected Completion October 2024
This is a project for a 9 bedroom, 11.5 bathroom 15,000 square foot private residence in Steamboat Springs. In my role as a staff designer at AW Architects, I took on a project management role alongside a primary design role after my project manager left the firm several months into the project.

The clients for the project asked for us to develop a vacation home which could expand and contract in size with the changing occupancy requirements of a large family with many children and elderly visitors. Accordingly we were asked to situate all of the primary indoor-outdoor living space, including a great room, game room, pool, garage, and wheelchair access bedroom on a single level within a tight zoning boundary on a sloped site. In addition, the bedrooms and living space, divided into three separate wings, can be expanded and contracted with movable panels to ensure the interior space of the large home always feels appropriately sized to the number of occupants and guests, from a single couple to 18+ family members, guests, and children.

Due to the scale and scope of the project, which was additionally subject to subdivision-specific zoning and design guidelines, we worked in close coordination with a full spectrum of consultants, including landscape architects; interior designers; building science professionals; structural, civil, and MEP engineers; pool, controls, and lighting consultants; and others.

The home is designed to maximize views both inwards, towards a carefully landscaped, seasonally planted private courtyard, and outwards, to its stunning mountain site opposite Steamboat Springs ski mountain.
